Signs your AC needs a repair, not just a filter
- It runs constantly but the house never cools. Usually low refrigerant from a leak, a failing compressor, or a badly restricted coil.
- It cools, but the air feels damp and clammy. Almost always a humidity problem — see below, this one is specific to our climate.
- Warm air from the vents. Frequently a frozen evaporator coil, a tripped breaker, or a failed capacitor.
- Water around the indoor unit. A clogged condensate drain line. Common here, and it will damage a ceiling if left.
- Grinding, squealing or a hard electrical hum. Motor or capacitor failure. Shut it off and call — running it can turn a small repair into a compressor replacement.
- The breaker keeps tripping. Stop resetting it. That is an electrical fault and it is a fire risk.
Why Charleston is harder on air conditioners
Salt air corrodes condensers
If you live on Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, Folly Beach or anywhere within a few miles of the water, salt in the air attacks the aluminum fins and copper of your outdoor unit. It is the single biggest reason coastal systems fail years earlier than inland ones. We check for fin corrosion and cabinet rust on every visit, and we can rinse and coat coils to slow it down.
Humidity is a separate problem from temperature
This is the complaint we hear most and the one most often misdiagnosed: the thermostat says 74°F but the house still feels sticky. An oversized air conditioner satisfies the thermostat quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to pull moisture out of the air. If your system shuts off in under about ten minutes, that is the likely cause. The answer is rarely a bigger unit — it is usually a correctly sized system, a variable-speed blower, or a whole-home dehumidifier.
Long cooling seasons mean more running hours
We run air conditioning roughly eight months a year. A system in Charleston simply accumulates more hours than the same unit in Ohio, which is why annual maintenance matters more here than the manufacturer’s manual implies.
What happens on a repair visit
- We arrive in a marked van, in uniform, in the window we promised. You get a text when the technician is on the way.
- We diagnose before we quote. Refrigerant pressures, electrical readings, airflow, drain line, coil condition and thermostat operation.
- We show you what we found. Photographs of the actual part, not a generic brochure.
- You get a firm price before any work starts. No hourly meter running while you decide.
- We test the repair and clean up. Then we tell you what else we noticed, and what can safely wait.
Should you repair it or replace it?
Our rule of thumb: if the system is under roughly ten years old and the repair costs a fraction of replacement, repair it. If it is older, still uses R-22 refrigerant, or has failed more than once in a season, replacement usually costs less over the following five years.
We will give you both numbers and let you decide. Our technicians are not paid commission on equipment sales, so there is no incentive to talk you into a system you do not need. If you do decide to replace, we offer financing options and can usually install within a few days.
