The filter is the cheapest part of your HVAC system and the one most likely to cause an expensive failure. We pull out collapsed, gray, pollen-caked filters on service calls all year, and a fair number of the repairs we write up trace directly back to one.
Choosing a filter is not about buying the most expensive one on the shelf. It is about matching what your particular system can move air through. Here is how that actually works, and what an 8-month cooling season and a Summerville spring do to the math.
MERV ratings in plain language
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It is a number from 1 to 16 for residential purposes, and it describes how small a particle the filter catches. Higher number, finer capture.
- MERV 1–4. The cheap spun fiberglass panel. It protects the blower motor from lint and little else. Pollen and fine dust go straight through.
- MERV 5–8. Basic pleated. Catches pollen, dust mite debris, mold spores and most household dust. This is the practical baseline for a Lowcountry home.
- MERV 9–12. Better pleated media. Adds finer dust, pet dander and a good share of smaller airborne particles. A meaningful step up for allergy sufferers.
- MERV 13–16. Very fine capture, including smoke-sized particles. Excellent air quality — but only if your system can physically pull air through it, and many residential systems cannot.
Why the cheapest filter and the finest filter are both wrong
The dollar fiberglass panel does almost nothing for your air, and it lets dust reach the evaporator coil. A dirty coil loses capacity, runs colder, and in a humid climate that is a direct path to freezing up. Cleaning a coil costs many times what better filters would have cost.
Go too far the other way and you create a different problem. A dense MERV 13 in a 1-inch slot restricts airflow. Your blower is designed to move a certain volume of air against a certain resistance. Choke it and the symptoms follow a familiar pattern: weak air at the registers, rooms that never reach temperature, a coil that ices over, longer run times, and eventually a blower motor or compressor working under strain it was not built for.
We measure static pressure on the system rather than guessing. That reading tells us what your equipment can actually handle. Sometimes the answer is that you should not put a MERV 13 in a 1-inch slot — you should change the slot.
Media cabinets versus 1-inch filters
A standard 1-inch filter has very little surface area, so to catch fine particles it has to be dense. Density means resistance, and resistance is what hurts your system.
A media cabinet solves that with geometry. It is a 4 to 5 inch deep housing installed at the return, holding a filter with far more pleated surface area. More surface means air passes through more slowly and with less resistance, so you get finer filtration and better airflow at the same time. It is the single upgrade we recommend most often to households dealing with allergies.
The practical bonus is interval. A 1-inch filter in a Charleston home in spring can be visibly loaded in a month. A deep media filter typically runs six months to a year, depending on the house. Fewer changes, fewer forgotten changes.

Pine pollen, and why spring is different here
Summerville is called Flowertown in the Pines for a reason. For several weeks each spring, pine pollen coats cars, porches and driveways in that unmistakable yellow-green film. It gets pulled into your return along with everything else.
During pollen season we tell customers to check the filter every two to three weeks rather than waiting for the calendar. Heavy pollen loads a filter faster than anything else in the year, and a loaded filter starves airflow at exactly the point the cooling season is starting up.
It also loads the outdoor condenser coil and the indoor evaporator. That is a large part of why we push spring AC maintenance in this area — catching pollen buildup before the summer run hours start saves a lot of grief in July.
How often to change it
General guidance for a Lowcountry home, adjusted for our long season:
- 1-inch pleated, no pets. Every 60 days, monthly during pollen season and peak summer.
- 1-inch pleated with pets or a large household. Every 30 days, no exceptions.
- 4 to 5 inch media. Every 6 to 12 months, checked at each maintenance visit.
- Any filter, held to the light. If you cannot see light through it, it was due a while ago.
Also check that the arrow on the frame points toward the air handler. Backward filters are more common than you would think, and they collapse into the blower.
What we do on a filtration visit
We look at what filter your system takes, what slot it has, and what the equipment can support. We measure static pressure with the filter in and out so you can see the difference in real numbers. We check the coil and blower wheel for accumulated dust, since those tell the story of what the previous filters were letting through.
If your ductwork leaks, we will mention it, because unfiltered crawlspace air pulled in through a separated joint bypasses your filter completely. There is no point upgrading filtration while the system is drinking damp air from under the house — that is a duct sealing conversation first.
